Mother’s Day, Mary and Jesus

Written by: Jalissa Sunshine   |   May 12, 2024

Luke 1:30-31

“But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.

You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.”

 Happy Mother’s Day!

This blog is for every one of us because each of us is a son or daughter of a mother. We want to take the time to celebrate the uniqueness of moms and how their essence reveals more about who God is.

I became a mother this year, and honestly it has been such a beautiful journey.  I want to share a few personal reflections as a new mom.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the premiere of “Jesus a Deaf Missions Film,” a movie produced by Deaf for Deaf, entirely in American Sign Language. It was such a clear display of the gospel message of Jesus and His life among us.  I can’t wait for its release this June 2024.

One of the most powerful moments for me was watching Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the movie. I was able to really identify with her losing her only son, Jesus, in a way I had never experienced before.

While I have seen and understood Mary as the mother of Jesus, I never identified with the intimate feelings of a mother’s heart until I had a son of my own.

Seeing Jesus crucified on the cross, caused me to feel the heartbreak of a mother witnessing her son in pain. I felt the desperation of a mother wanting to save and protect her son. I felt the injustice of her innocent child being beaten. I felt the mothers heart.

This experience led me to weep when Mary wept, to reflect on how to love and cherish my son with deeper levels of compassion, and to be in awe of the true sacrifice Jesus made for me. I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect with the Lord in a new way by intimately understanding the heart of a mother. The love and compassion that I have for my son has given me a new perspective on the sacrifices made by Jesus.

As you celebrate Mother’s day today, whether by honoring your own mother, remembering her, or being a mother yourself, I encourage you to reflect on the relationships with mothers in your life. Consider how these relationships can serve as a pathway to understanding God’s love. Take a moment to think about how you can connect with God through the love you’ve received from a mother-figure in your life.

Happy Mother’s Day!
